Encore

Back to Watch Faces

Project Overview

I designed and built Encore, a digital Wear OS watch face inspired by Broadway marquees and theatrical typography.

Design problem

The theme called for strong visual character, but the watch still needed to read quickly and accommodate up to four complications.

My approach

I studied marquees, playbills and stage lighting to identify elements that could translate into the small display: bold type, illuminated effects and a structured composition.

Typography and hierarchy

I explored typefaces, visual weights and spacing to find a marquee-like treatment that remained readable. Color iterations balanced the lighting effect with contrast.

Integrating complications

I worked up to four complications into the layout, adjusting their placement so personalized information could sit within the established visual structure.

Refinement

Testing informed adjustments to spacing, typography, contrast and complication placement.

Delivered

A Broadway-inspired digital watch face with configurable information, developed from visual references through implementation and testing.

What the project shows

The core task was translating a strong visual theme into a functional interface, then refining the small details that allow both to work together.
